Family Portraits at Duke Gardens {Raleigh Durham Family Photographer}

I recently met the “P” Family at Duke Gardens for a family portrait session. Duke Gardens is such a fantastic location for portraits – there are so many beautiful locations throughout the garden that make perfect backdrops with a wide variety of different looks.

“R” and “S” were perfect subjects – they did everything I asked without complaining – even when I lied several times about “just one more shot.” The problem with the variety of “looks” at Duke Gardens is that every time you round a curve in the path, you come across a yet another location that’s perfect for one more pose. So even after we’d finished the session and were walking back to the parking lot, we’d round a corner or walk up a hill, and the light would be idyllic and, yeah… I lied several times when telling them, “This is the last pose – I promise!”

But just look at the way their beautiful eyes reflect the light. It would take a lot more self control than I possess on a good day to stop photographing these two gorgeous kids while the light was still good.

Sneak Peek for the “T” Family {Apex Family Photographer}

It’s been a busy week, and I feel like I’m starting to fall behind. I had to take a break for a minute to share a sneak peek for the “T” family. They were recently sealed at the Raleigh Temple (in Apex), and they chose me to help document the occasion. It was such a beautiful day, and they were all so happy after the ceremony that it brought tears to my eyes.

I’ll share more images from the day, but I just had to share this one image that stood out to me. Congratulations, “T” family – I’m so excited for you!

Urban Bridal Session {Raleigh Durham Wedding Photographer}

When I heard that this bride was wearing a red dress at her wedding, I was so excited to create her bridal portraits. I had the perfect location in mind, because I knew the blue backdrop would be an amazing contrast to her dress.

I was even more excited when I met the bride for the first time at our session. Just look at her – she’s absolutely gorgeous! The red dress is so much fun, and I love how her hairstyle added to the vintage feel of the session. I also love how the softness of her hair and makeup contrasts with the rough urban background.

Here are some of my favorite images from the session. We were having so much fun, we kept shooting even after the sun set – it was a great opportunity to play around with my off camera flash.

Baby “S” {Raleigh Durham Newborn Photographer}

Baby “S” recently came to the studio to model some new hats for me. For some reason, he didn’t want to sleep for us, and he was only happy when being held. Some days are just like that – it’s tough being a baby!;)

Luckily, his aunt came along to the session, and she was able to work her baby magic. She finally managed to get him to sleep, and as long as she stayed close to him, he would sleep long enough for me to capture a few images.

Pretty Light {Raleigh Durham Child Photographer}

It’s no secret that photographers love pretty light. You can have a gorgeous subject, perfect location, and the world’s fanciest camera, but if you don’t have the right light, you won’t end up with a beautiful image. While there are a wide variety of situations and settings that result in great portrait lighting, one of my very favorites is the golden, hazy light that happens within a couple hours of the sun setting. It’s the reason I recommend evening sessions during the summer months – there’s just something magical about the light before sunset.
